Pheed – A Teen-friendly Network With No Porn, Nudity

pheed-ss-iphoneAccording to a Forbes article this week titled Vine Users Flock to Pheed, the upstart social network is hot, and rapidly gaining in popularity. I took a fresh look at the site today (I don’t use it regularly) and if your teen is using it, you might be interested to hear that it is very teen-friendly relative to some other social networks, as least from the point of view of a parent.

For starters, the age limit to join is 13, but Pheed readily acknowledges the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and goes out of its way to encourage minors between 13 and 18 to secure their parents’ consent before joining.

THE SERVICE IS NOT AVAILABLE TO PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 13… BY USING THE SERVICE, YOU REPRESENT THAT YOU ARE AT LEAST 13 YEARS OF AGE AND HAVE NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY SUSPENDED OR REMOVED FROM THE SERVICE. If you are 13 or older but under the age of 18, you MUST review THESE TERMS with your parent or guardian to make sure that you and your parent or guardian understand it.

The above warning is not foolproof, but it is more of an effort than most networks make.

There is no porn or nudity allowed on Pheed. While it appears from the terms of service and Community Guidelines that artistic nudity may be permitted, a simple Google search reveals users complaining that all nudity is removed by the site’s administrators.

“If things I post are going to be removed, then why am I here?”

“Dear Pheed Admin: Not to sound like a perverted a**hole, but if you take nudity off of this site/app…then I seriously have no reason to utilize it.”

Last but not least, and refreshingly, users retain ownership of their posted content.

PHEED USERS OWN THEIR CONTENT. WE DO NOT OWN OR APPLY ANY CLAIM TO YOUR CONTENT. WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SELL OR TRADE YOUR CONTENT. WHAT USERS UPLOAD TO PHEED IS THEIR OWNERSHIP AND THEY HAVE FULL RIGHTS TO IT.

For users who care about their content being used, or not used, in advertisements a la Facebook, or wanting to avoid adult content, Pheed may be an answer, or at least another place to post your Vine and Instagram content.
